Wegmans recalls over 1,100 pounds of chicken that were sold uninspected

The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Tuesday the recall of about 1,125 pounds of chicken sold at Wegmans Food Market.

The Rochester, New York, company recalled the chicken items because they were produced without being federally inspected.

These are the products subject to recall:
• About 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Italian Flavored Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/24/2016.
• Approximately 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Brown Sugar Barbecue Seasoned Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/15/2016.
• 3-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Garlic & Fennel Whole Chicken Roaster” with a use-by date of 1/13/2016.
• 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wokery Sherry Chicken 27482” with use-by date of 1/13/2016.

The chicken items subject to recall, which were produced on Jan. 3, have the establishment number “EST. or P-7567” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They were sold in Wegmans retail locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

According to the FSIS, the establishment changed its production schedule, producing these products outside the approved hours of operation. The issue was discovered by FSIS inspection personnel during a review of establishment records.

There have been no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Consumers are urged to return the product to place of purchase for a full refund.

The recall comes on the heels of foodborne illness outbreaks in 2015 that were linked to consumption of Blue Bell ice cream, food at Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants, and chicken salad sold at Costco. Collectively, those outbreaks sickened hundreds.
