Ram Gopal Varma is arguably one of the finest filmmakers of this age in Indian Cinema. When it comes to bringing the lives and times of real-life people on to screen, he does the best. This was proved with 'The Attacks of 26/11' (Kasab and 2008 Mumbai attacks), Raktha Charitra - 1&2 (based on Paritala Ravi and Suri), Killing Veerappan (on smuggler Veerappan).Especially, he gets his casting right. Be it Kasab or Veerappan, RGV stunned one and all. And he did repeat the act by roping in Sandy for Vangaveeti Radha and Vangaveeti Ranga. But that's not all. There's more. Apart from casting, camera work and technical aspects, his films of late are missing 'substance' which is vital for a film to appeal the audiences. In a TV interview very recently after the release of his latest Vangaveeti, when RGV was asked about not paying attention to minute details like sign posts or vehicle registration number plates in the period film, Ramu shot back in his own style. "Those who keep aside major issues and notice such minute things remain low. They'll never grow," said RGV.While he might be right to an extent, but the point is that the same applies to RGV as well.Leaving substance aside, the total film of Vangaveeti revolves around the five murders - Chalasani Venkatratnam, Vanagveeti Radha, Devineni Gandhi, Devineni Murali and Vangaveeti Ranga. No doubt, murders have played a key role in the history of Vangaveeti and Vijayawada, but the film is such that it's all about murders and murders and murders. That's not true. The fact is there's more to it. RGV has conveniently forgotten to capture the story. Varma is too obsessed with technical elements and other miscellaneous aspects rather than the story. Even screenplay too he gets it right. And most importantly, pre-climax and climax are very important for any film or story.Ending the film abruptly with a kinda joke - Only Durgamma knows, Ramu has taken away the total essence of the film and serious mood of audience, in just one go. He should have ended the film showing the aftermath of Ranga's brutal killing that is little known to youth of present age as they were kids when the incident took place.Had RGV corrected himself with these little things, he could have succeeded. Nevertheless, Vangaveeti isn't the bad film. But the thing is audience, critics have expected a lot given that RGV stated that this is his last Telugu film as he may not find such story again in his lifetime. As usual, RGV failed to meet the expectations and dashed the hopes.Let's hope he'd learn his mistakes and bounce back soon.
